Driveabout Campers Rental Terms

Important Information About Your Rentals

On arrival, you will be required to sign a rental agreement with the operators of Driveabout Campers Australia. Here is a summary of their terms and conditions.

Definitions
The following definitions apply for the Terms and Conditions for Drive about Campers Australia.

  • The Supplier means the operator of Driveabout Campers Australia.
  • The Client is also referred to as the hirer(s) or renter(s) or customer(s).
PAYMENT TERMS:
The initial deposit paid is non-refundable and is collected upon booking confirmation. The balance is payable 24 days prior to vehicle collection.
For bookings confirmed less than 24 days prior to the pick up date: the total balance will be collected, from your nominated credit card, upon confirmation. Please ensure there are sufficient funds available at this time. A bond amount is also payable upon arrival and is fully refundable providing the vehicle condition is approved.

Any payment made upon vehicle collection is subject to a credit card and administration fee of 2% or AUD$22, whichever is greater. Please remember that this does not include your own bank or credit card fees.

SPECIAL PAYMENT TERMS:
Full balance of payment (including the deposit) will be collected at the time of confirmation if you have elected to process your booking in a currency different to AUD.

Please Note: If you have chosen the Early Bird special (10% off) the balance of your booking will be due 125 days prior to your pick up / vehicle collection date.

Cancellation Policy
The initial deposit paid is non-refundable. In addition to forfeiting your deposit, the following charges also apply:

- If cancelled 31 days or more prior to pick up a $200 fee applies.
- If cancelled from 30 days to 13 days prior to pick up 20% of Total Rental
- If cancelled 12 days to 7 day prior to pick up 50% of Total Rental
- If cancelled 6 days prior or on day of pick up or NO-Show 100% of Total Rental

If a vehicle is returned early for any reason there are no refunds for the unused rental days.

Altering a Booking
There is no charge for alterations to the booking unless the hired equipment is required for a longer period of time in which the customer pays for the extra days subject to availability and where a change falls into a peak period the current rates will apply. Where a shortening of the hire term occurs within 24 days prior to the start date, the original booking period stands and there is no refund for the days rentals not required.

Late return
Late return fee - up to 2 hours late $55 or after 2 hours - full days hire.
For every day past the due date that the van is late, the customer will incur the maximum daily rate for that vehicle, plus the normal daily rent in order to cover the potential loss of rental income. No show or contact and the vehicle will be reported to the police as stolen. The renter will be liable for all retrieval costs.

Area of Travel
All campers  with rentals up to 7 days have a limit of 150 km per day. excess kilometres will be charged @ 22 cents per km .Any questions do not hesitate to ask.
Rentals on the East Coast are to the area between Adelaide in South Australia and Cape Tribulation (north of Cairns) in Queensland that is within 500km of the coast.
You can apply at the time of booking or before pick up to have the above area amended to meet your specific needs; however travel outside this area is at the sole discretion of Driveabout Campers.
Travel outside the outside east coast area is permitted when approved as per your rental agreement. Additional fees may apply depending on your rental term. Eg. Areas include: Western Australia, Northern Territory, Mt Isa, Bourke, Broken Hill and Alice Springs.

Road Restrictions
Vehicles must be kept on sealed roads at all times (tar, asphalt and concrete). All vehicles may only be driven on recognised roads as shown on maps.
Driving on unsealed roads up to 500 metres to a camp site or rest area or breach access is permitted.
All insurance and refundable money are waived if the above conditions are breached. Any damage and/or recovery costs are the responsibility of the renter.
East Coast travels of Australia only, unless authorised.

Repairs
All repairs must be authorised by Driveabout campers prior to any repair work. Repairs will be approved provided the renter was not directly responsible for the damage. Driveabout Campers will reimburse you for expenses incurred for any authorised repairs as long as receipts can be presented. We will not accept any responsibility for hotel or motel charges, meals or out of pocket expenses, in the case of breakdowns or for any lost days, but we will reimburse lost days hire.

Note: All our campervans are serviced every 5000km. We will arrange for the campervan to be serviced at our cost, but you will have to be without the use of campervan for the time taken to service. If you travel beyond this distance without Driveabout Campers’ consent and if you breakdown we will not be responsible for any loss of days hire or accommodation or meal charge or out of pocket expenses.

You will be responsible for ALL mechanical repairs and subsequent damage and any retrieval costs of your travel and breakdown beyond the service period eg. worn-out brakes, broken fan belt, etc.

You must inform us at least 48 hours or 500km prior to the required service interval due, so we can book the campervan in for a service at next available service town. Service not available on weekends or public holidays.

Toll Charges
All our campervans are fitted with E-tags or video pass for your convenience, we will charge at the end of hire cost of tolls, plus a $7.70 handling administration fee.

Traffic Infringements
We reserve the right to charge the renter an administration fee of $99 for any traffic or parking infringements. You must inform Driveabout Campers in the event of an accident at the earliest possible opportunity and no later than 24 hours.

Vehicle Consultation
On pick up of the campervan, our staff will provide a complimentary consultation. This includes an explanation of where everything is and how to use them.

Credit Cards
We only accept MasterCard and Visa Cards and there will be a merchant fee of 2% of the total hire. A minimum administration fee of $22.00 applies regardless of payment method.

Exchange Rate/Currency Variations
All credit card transactions are conducted in Australian dollars, due to exchange rate fluctuations there could be some variance in the amount refunded compared with the rate initially charged. We will not accept any liability for this.

Bond Deposit/Vehicle Excess
A bond is required on all vehicles at time of collection. This is determined by the excess reduction option. Your security bond can be paid by credit card or (cash - Gold Coast branch only). The credit card holder must be present and able to sign for the vehicle security bond upon vehicle collection. The cardholder is jointly and severally liable for any damage to the rental vehicle. The security bond is fully refundable provided the vehicle is returned on time, undamaged, in clean order, with the correct amount of fuel and to the right location. Failure to return the vehicle clean and all items listed on the signed form, undamaged or without the correct fuel level or to the wrong location will incur a fee which will be advised upon return of the vehicle. Where there is a pick up offsite the bond must be prepaid.

In the event of an accident in which you are not at fault, we will hold your bond until the 3rd party agrees to pay our costs. Once these costs are met we will refund to you your bond less admin fees and expenses, and loss of rental.

Where a higher bond is utilised the insurance excess portion is refunded (where applicable) and the renter must submit a letter of demand for the remaining bond portion to the 3rd party.

Where we are unable to recover costs then it is the renter who is responsible for recovering the excess money from the third party. Please note some insurance claims can take months or even years to resolve.

Vehicle Excess
The renter is responsible for the excess of the cost of damage to their rented vehicle or third party property, including: towing, recovery costs, theft, fire, break-in or vandalism. This also includes the cost of the daily rentals for the period the vehicle is off road for accident repairs. The excess is applicable regardless of who is at fault and must be paid at the time the accident report is completed, not at the completion of the rental. The excess will be refunded is we are successful in recovering all the cost of the damages from the third party. Please note that insurance claims can take months to resolve. The excess applies in respect of each claim, not rental. All damage covered is forfeited if the terms and conditions of the rental agreement are breached.

Please note
All standard bonds for all age groups are charged to your credit card.  All option 1 and 2 bond and excess is a credit card swipe only.

Option 2 for all drivers and age groups includes 2 tyre replacements and unlimited punctures, 1 windscreen and unlimited chips up to 1 windscreen replacement accidental damage up to $300 in total claims (an example: if you accidently damage the fridge door and the cost of repairs was $150, then there would be no charge to you the renter).
Note: this does not cover lost or stolen items, no administration fees for traffic infringements, overhead and undercarriage damage cover.

All insurance cover will be made void if any of the following are breached:
Items 1:

  • Submersion in water
  • Contact with Salt Water
  • Creek or river crossings
  • Driving through flooded areas
  • Beach driving

Items not covered

  • Personal belongings are not covered. We recommend the renter does not leave valuables in the vehicle and should take out personal insurance.
  • Breach of Rental Agreements terms. The renter will be responsible for the total cost any damage. This will include any damage caused by wilful conduct eg: sitting or standing on the bonnet or roof of the vehicle
  • Bogged vehicles - The renter will be responsible for the cost to retrieve or recover a vehicle which has become bogged
  • Incorrect use of fuel - The renter will be responsible for any associated cost if fuel is used incorrectly (fuel being diesel or petrol). Includes any associated costs related to the incident
  • Under body damage or overhead damage, regardless of excess package taken if caused by items 1.
  • The cost to replace keys which have become lost or retrieval of keys which have been locked in a vehicle
  • Any damage caused by driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and excess of $2,500.00 will apply regardless of bond option taken
  • The vehicle rented may only be used to legally carry the amount of passengers allowed. If more passengers are carried than allowed, Driveabout Campers does not accept any responsibility
  • Drivers not identified on the rental agreement and/or drivers that do not have a current open licence
  • The carrying of illegal or dangerous goods.

The renter is responsible for any recovery costs incurred through negligence regardless of the insurance excess.  Driveabout Campers cannot be held responsible for any breakdowns.

Vehicle Model and Size
All Driveabout Camper vehicles are advertised openly and honestly on the website with an accurate description of age, size and carrying capacity of the vehicle. All vehicles are supplied in direct relationship to models booked by the hirer, any cancellation or refusal to take the vehicle that was booked is classed as a cancellation on the day of pickup and will not be entitled to a refund under any circumstance.

Note 1: On PICK UP, an inspection of the vehicle will be conducted by the hirer and staff prior to the vehicle being released for rental. The inspection will cover external panel and windscreen; internals of the campervan; and inventory supplied. You will fill out the condition report with the Driveabout Camper’s representative, showing any dent or damage to the vehicle. The cleanliness of the vehicle you will check to make sure it is to our industry level.

Note 2: Once the condition report is signed the Hirer agrees that they have received the vehicle in satisfactory condition and no refunds will be provided for issues with the condition of the vehicle from this point forward.

Note 3: Driveabout Campers is not responsible for any insect such as but not limited to ants, flies, and mosquitoes. No refunds will be provided for any infestations mentioned above or that could have occurred during the rental period.

Keys
The Hirer will be responsible for full cost of replacing keys which are lost, broken or for the retrieval of keys locked in a vehicle. The cost of a locksmith travelling to the vehicle will be at the Hirer's expense. Driveabout Campers will not be responsible for any additional expense occurred by the Hirer if they lose the Keys. eg. problems in remote area and during Australian national holidays such as Christmas, Easter, etc. Due to the sheer size of Australia, sometimes it may take longer than normal to relocate a replacement vehicle, spare part, fix a problem on the roadside or be towed to the nearest garage, If this happens, then Driveabout Campers will do its upmost to rectify the problem as soon as possible, but will not be held liable for any additional costs the hirer may incur due to being in a remote location or a Public Holiday.

Malfunction of Equipment
Malfunction of radio/cassette players, DVD, GPS, stoves, air-conditioning units, refrigerator, water pumps are not considered a mechanical breakdown as the vehicle is still able to continue driving during your holiday. No alternative accommodation or food items will be paid for during the duration of these malfunctions. If one of these items does go wrong, then they can only be inspected at one of our authorized regional depots across Australia.

Please note that GPS may not at all times give the correct route.

Any refund for on-road problems will be processed when the vehicle is dropped off at its final destination. Down time will be calculated in rentals days, and the refund will be credited to the Hirer's credit card.

Night Time Driving
It is prohibited in the outback due to a large number of injured animals ie. kangaroos and people falling asleep while driving.

Do not swerve for animals
If an animal runs out in front of you do the following: Apply the brakes with a pumping action, keep straight, do not swerve!
If you hit the animal you may sustain damage. If you swerve you will roll and definitely cause serious injury to you and the people travelling with you and damage to your/other vehicles.

Rental Period
A rental period is based on a calendar day basis. Pickup day counts as day 1 regardless of pickup time and returns day counts as last day regardless of drop off time. Late drop off fees apply.

Minimum rental:
Minimum hire is 3-5 days (Gold Coast and Cairns branches only). Minimum hire requirements for other branches depending on the type of camper and length of hire.

Change of Vehicle
Should the vehicle booked be unavailable through unforeseen circumstances, Driveabout Campers reserves the right to substitute an alternative vehicle without prior notification. This shall not constitute a breach of contract and does not entitle the hirer a refund.

Age Restrictions
Drivers must be 21 years or over, with a full drivers licence. If the licence is not in English format than an international driver’s licence is required.
Drivers aged between 21 and 24 years are charged additional bond charges as per the web site.

Cleaning Fee
A cleaning fee is imposed if the vehicle is not returned in a reasonable condition to the manager’s discretion. If the vehicle is deemed to be in an unsatisfactory condition, the renter will incur a minimum fee of $85 to cover the cleaning costs.

Smoking
No smoking under any circumstance.

Calculation Errors
Driveabout Campers will not honour calculation errors. Should a calculation error occur Driveabout Campers will charge for the shortfall or will refund the overcharge.

Limit of Liability
In the event of no alternate campervan being available to the renter our liability is limited to a refund of the hire or prepaid monies or in the case of a mechanical failure (unless caused by the renter) the remainder of the hire period.

Animals
No animals are allowed in campervans.

Note 1: On PICK UP, an inspection of the vehicle will be conducted by the hirer and staff prior to the vehicle being released for rental. The inspection will cover external panel and windscreen; internals of the campervan; and inventory supplied. You will fill out the condition report with the Driveabout Camper’s representative, showing any dent or damage to the vehicle. The cleanliness of the vehicle you will check to make sure it is to our industry level.

Note 2: Once the condition report is signed the Hirer agrees that they have received the vehicle in satisfactory condition and no refunds will be provided for issues with the condition of the vehicle from this point forward.

Note 3: Driveabout Campers is not responsible for any insect such as but not limited to ants, flies, and mosquitoes. No refunds will be provided for any infestations mentioned above or that could have occurred during the rental period.

Keys
The Hirer will be responsible for full cost of replacing keys which are lost, broken or for the retrieval of keys locked in a vehicle. The cost of a locksmith travelling to the vehicle will be at the Hirer's expense. Driveabout Campers will not be responsible for any additional expense occurred by the Hirer if they lose the Keys. eg. problems in remote area and during Australian national holidays such as Christmas, Easter, etc. Due to the sheer size of Australia, sometimes it may take longer than normal to relocate a replacement vehicle, spare part, fix a problem on the roadside or be towed to the nearest garage, If this happens, then Driveabout Campers will do its upmost to rectify the problem as soon as possible, but will not be held liable for any additional costs the hirer may incur due to being in a remote location or a Public Holiday.

Malfunction of Equipment
Malfunction of radio/cassette players, DVD, GPS, stoves, air-conditioning units, refrigerator, water pumps are not considered a mechanical breakdown as the vehicle is still able to continue driving during your holiday. No alternative accommodation or food items will be paid for during the duration of these malfunctions. If one of these items does go wrong, then they can only be inspected at one of our authorized regional depots across Australia.

Please note that GPS may not at all times give the correct route.

Any refund for on-road problems will be processed when the vehicle is dropped off at its final destination. Down time will be calculated in rentals days, and the refund will be credited to the Hirer's credit card.

Night Time Driving
It is prohibited in the outback due to a large number of injured animals ie. kangaroos and people falling asleep while driving.

Do not swerve for animals
If an animal runs out in front of you do the following: Apply the brakes with a pumping action, keep straight, do not swerve!
If you hit the animal you may sustain damage. If you swerve you will roll and definitely cause serious injury to you and the people travelling with you and damage to your/other vehicles.

Rental Period
A rental period is based on a calendar day basis. Pickup day counts as day 1 regardless of pickup time and returns day counts as last day regardless of drop off time. Late drop off fees apply.

Minimum rental:
Minimum hire is 3-5 days (Gold Coast and Cairns branches only). Minimum hire requirements for other branches depending on the type of camper and length of hire.

Change of Vehicle
Should the vehicle booked be unavailable through unforeseen circumstances, Driveabout Campers reserves the right to substitute an alternative vehicle without prior notification. This shall not constitute a breach of contract and does not entitle the hirer a refund.

Age Restrictions
Drivers must be 21 years or over, with a full drivers licence. If the licence is not in English format than an international driver’s licence is required.
Drivers aged between 21 and 24 years are charged additional bond charges as per the web site.

Cleaning Fee
A cleaning fee is imposed if the vehicle is not returned in a reasonable condition to the manager’s discretion. If the vehicle is deemed to be in an unsatisfactory condition, the renter will incur a minimum fee of $85 to cover the cleaning costs.

Smoking
No smoking under any circumstance.

Calculation Errors
Driveabout Campers will not honour calculation errors. Should a calculation error occur Driveabout Campers will charge for the shortfall or will refund the overcharge.

Limit of Liability
In the event of no alternate campervan being available to the renter our liability is limited to a refund of the hire or prepaid monies or in the case of a mechanical failure (unless caused by the renter) the remainder of the hire period.

Animals
No animals are allowed in campervans.
